What is ERCP Procedure?
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a specialized technique used to study the bile ducts, pancreatic duct, and gallbladder. Ducts are drainage routes from the liver (bile ducts) and pancreas (pancreatic duct).
How ERCP is performed
Your doctor passes an endoscope through the mouth, esophagus, and stomach into the duodenum. After locating the major duodenal papilla, a catheter is passed into the ducts, contrast dye is injected, and X-rays are taken. Sphincterotomy and biliary stent placement can be performed when needed.
How to prepare
Fast at least six hours (preferably overnight). Discuss regular medications and any contrast or medication allergies. Tell your doctor about aspirin, arthritis medicines, anticoagulants, clopidogrel, insulin, and heart or lung conditions.
